Madekwe was born in South London, England into a family of mixed blood. She is English, and her father was Nigerian. Her family was raised on a south London council estate and attended The Brit School at age fourteen. She attended The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London where she gained an BA in acting. The show premiered in May 2013 and it was revealed that Madekwe who had played a regular role in the past two seasons, was to leave the series with a guest appearance on the premiere episode of the season's new episode.
